One of the things I've been paying attention to recently is the impact our increasing use of encryption could have on our operations. Specifically, over the past few years, we have been enabling the encryption functionality in a number of applications and platforms throughout our infrastructure, yet we lack a scalable approach to maintaining the configurable aspects of these systems. As you know, an unexpected certificate expiration or a mis-managed key could cause a system outage.

Some of the critical areas I believe we are lacking include, 1) a centralized key and certificate registry with ongoing monitoring and reporting; 2) consistent, policy-driven configuration of the applications and systems; and 3) workflow-driven maintenance of keys and certificates.

Recently, I was invited to a lunch-time workshop by Venafi, a vendor who appears to solve some of the challenges I listed above. According to Venafi, they are helping several large Financial Services and Telecommunications companies implement encryption management platforms, and I believe it is important for our organization to stay current on this potentially new breed of systems management software.

With your permission, I plan to attend their event on Wednesday, March 19th from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel. I anticipate returning from this meeting with a better understanding of encryption management and the steps our organization needs to take in order to maximize our operational efficiency and protect our system availability.
